Not all good music is old. But Jenny Lewis' kind-of solo debut comes from someplace old. Or rather, someplaces old. It comes from LA in the 1970s starring a lost country girl from the 1950s and backup vocals from a 1960s girl band. David Letterman had her on sometime around this album's release and said something about it being strange music. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is purely American music sung by a songstress with a voice like porcelain. The Watson Twins are a perfect compliment to the voice and the music.I got this album at a Borders during my and my wife's brief tenure in Southern California. The Borders was in the same strip mall as was the Chili's I used to drink at with some other grad students. I bought it on the way to an evening's drinking and someone spotted it, which started a long, drunken conversation during which I realized that Southern Californians have possibly the worst taste in music of any Americans.
Best Song
I suppose "The Charging Sky" because I like the smirk with which she delivers some of the lines.
Released
January 24 2006.
Acquired
Shortly thereafter.
Next Closest
Rilo Kiley, of course. Maybe Neko Case? Emmylou Harris fans might like it as well.
Brush with greatness (note: may include name-dropping): It's of the second order and therefore probably not worth it.
